Medium Format Film: A route to mindfulness?
One of my favourite cameras is my 70 year old Rollieflex 2.8 TLR (twin lens reflex), a camera favoured by famous war photographer Lee Miller.
A roll of 120 film; my favourite is Kodak TriX for its rich blacks and contrast, has 12 exposures. Each and every press of the shutter counts. Composing, focusing and metering are methodical, exacting and meditative in equal measure. For me, slowing down, acute awareness of the light and attention to detail all become heightened when I use this beautiful mechanical box.
These are some recent images taken on the Lowry Trail in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland and our local Metro stations in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. A short run editions of Intaglio photgravure prints will be available to purchase early in 2025. More on that soon.
